KNOW YOUR RIGHTS! LEGAL TRENDS IMPACTING PHYSICIANS - June 4, 2016
The Seminole County Medical Society (SCMS) and Orange County Medical Society (OCMS) were proud to host the 2016 Legal Symposium at the Hilton Orlando/Altamonte Springs. REVENUE FROM YOUR PATIENT PORTALS?

We are in the final days of the transition to ICD-10. According to Medical Economics less than 50% of Physicians are going to be ready by the deadline. That is a big topic right now, but this article is not about Physicians transitioning to ICD-10. Instead, I am focusing on a topic that has surfaced recently through my conversations with Industry Professionals and Physicians. The question: Should I charge patients for the use of my Patient Portal? Never thought about it did you? When asked, HIPAA, Meaningful Use, Backlash from Patients all came to mind. Why at this point would anyone want to do anything that would hinder the use of the Patient Portal? But it is a valid question that needed additional research. Are there Physicians charging people for using their patient portals? According to an article in Becker’s Hospital Review, the answer is yes! The article had serious issues that the author neither mentioned nor addressed including the most pressing one— HIPAA. I will allow you to be the Judge.

The Florida Department of Health is experiencing an increase in the number of reports regarding abandoned medical records.
