The Orlando Campus of the Florida State University School of Medicine has opportunities for clinical faculty appointments in Internal Medicine (outpatient), Family Medicine (outpatient), Psychiatry and Geriatrics to teach required core clerkships in each of these specialties. There are also opportunities to teach in the Longitudinal required year-3 course. FSU is also looking for faculty to teach elective clerkships in Radiology.

The appointment process:
Appointment level is determined by credentials and may be at the clinical instructor, clinical assistant professor, clinical associate professor, or clinical professor levels. Reciprocation of previous academic appointments is respected.
All appointments must first be approved by the respective Clerkship Director. Nominations then go to the Orlando Campus Administrator who collects the necessary application materials for the prospective faculty. That information is then reviewed by the Campus Dean and the recommendation is submitted to the Regional Campus Community Board for approval—which occurs if there are no objections from any Board member(s).
The Campus Dean then makes a recommendation (including level of appointment) to the appropriate Department Chairman in Tallahassee. The Department Chair makes the appointment and forwards that to the Dean. The appointed physician then signs an acceptance of the appointment.
-
Assignment of students:
A faculty on a required clerkship may expect 1 to 4 students per year (only one at a time), depending on need, faculty availability, and faculty interest.
Longitudinal faculty are assigned one student for a 1/2–day experience every week for the student’s entire third year of medical school. Elective faculty can expect perhaps 1 to 2 students per year depending on the same factors and student interest.
-
Reimbursement and benefits:
Faculty are remunerated $500 per week per student assigned for the time the student is with them. Student assignments (with the exception of Longitudinal) are for 4 weeks per clerkship or rotation. Longitudinal faculty are paid $3,000 per academic year. Once a faculty is assigned a student, that faculty member receives full privileges for the FSUCOM electronic medical library and learning resourses, including free teaching software for personal computer and/or PDA that FSU will load without charge (drop off the device at the FSU office for installation).
-
Student evaluations:
Faculty must conduct the clerkship or rotation according to the course syllabus and must comply with defined goals and objectives. Faculty must complete student evaluations electronically by the due dates. Faculty are answerable to Clerkship Directors (who are basically department heads) with regard to student affairs and educational issues. The Campus Dean has ultimate responsibility for the conduct of the campus faculty. Clerkship Directors answer to the Campus Dean as well as Education Directors in Tallahassee.
-
Required training for all faculty:
All faculty of the required clerkships and Longitudinal must complete 6 hours of faculty development training prior to being assigned students and then 4 hours/year every year thereafter. These are held as 2-hour live sessions at the Orlando Campus Office and/or as on line learning modules. FSU encourages as many live sessions as possible.
