The Orlando Campus of the Florida State University School of Medicine has opportunities for clinical faculty appointments in Internal Medicine (outpatient), Family Medicine (outpatient), Psychiatry and Geriatrics to teach required core clerkships in each of these specialties. There are also opportunities to teach in the Longitudinal required year-3 course. FSU is also looking for faculty to teach elective clerkships in Radiology.
-
Contact information:
Any SCMS member interested in a faculty appointment should contact Michael J Muszynski, MD, FAAP, Dean of the Orlando Campus. His contact information is:
Florida State University College of Medicine
415 Briercliff Drive
Orlando, FL 32806
Phone: 407-835-4103
Fax: 407-835-4107e-mail: michael.muszynski@med.fsu.edu
-
The appointment process:
Appointment level is determined by credentials and may be at the clinical instructor, clinical assistant professor, clinical associate professor, or clinical professor levels. Reciprocation of previous academic appointments is respected.
All appointments must first be approved by the respective Clerkship Director. Nominations then go to the Orlando Campus Administrator who collects the necessary application materials for the prospective faculty. That information is then reviewed by the Campus Dean and the recommendation is submitted to the Regional Campus Community Board for approval—which occurs if there are no objections from any Board member(s).
The Campus Dean then makes a recommendation (including level of appointment) to the appropriate Department Chairman in Tallahassee. The Department Chair makes the appointment and forwards that to the Dean. The appointed physician then signs an acceptance of the appointment.
-
Assignment of students:
A faculty on a required clerkship may expect 1 to 4 students per year (only one at a time), depending on need, faculty availability, and faculty interest.
Longitudinal faculty are assigned one student for a 1/2–day experience every week for the student’s entire third year of medical school. Elective faculty can expect perhaps 1 to 2 students per year depending on the same factors and student interest.
-
Reimbursement and benefits:
Faculty are remunerated $500 per week per student assigned for the time the student is with them. Student assignments (with the exception of Longitudinal) are for 4 weeks per clerkship or rotation. Longitudinal faculty are paid $3,000 per academic year. Once a faculty is assigned a student, that faculty member receives full privileges for the FSUCOM electronic medical library and learning resourses, including free teaching software for personal computer and/or PDA that FSU will load without charge (drop off the device at the FSU office for installation).
-
Student evaluations:
Faculty must conduct the clerkship or rotation according to the course syllabus and must comply with defined goals and objectives. Faculty must complete student evaluations electronically by the due dates. Faculty are answerable to Clerkship Directors (who are basically department heads) with regard to student affairs and educational issues. The Campus Dean has ultimate responsibility for the conduct of the campus faculty. Clerkship Directors answer to the Campus Dean as well as Education Directors in Tallahassee.
-
Required training for all faculty:
All faculty of the required clerkships and Longitudinal must complete 6 hours of faculty development training prior to being assigned students and then 4 hours/year every year thereafter. These are held as 2-hour live sessions at the Orlando Campus Office and/or as on line learning modules. FSU encourages as many live sessions as possible.
Specific course syllabi can be reviewed at:
http://www.med.fsu.edu/education/Syllabi/ (Go to the Course called Doctoring 3 in Year-3 to read about the Longitudinal Course, as it is part of the Doctoring Longitudinal Curriculum in Year-3)

The Central Florida EMR Conference
Saturday, October 20, 2007: To be held at the University of Central Florida. The Conference is a joint effort of the Orange and Seminole County Medical Societies, and will bring Central Florida physicians the latest information on EMR systems and the most recent advances in health information technology. Look for more information about this conference soon.
Past EMR Confernces:
Florida AMDIS Conference - Saturday, March 17, 2007: This Conference for Florida's physician leaders in Health Information Technology was a great success. To see the Conference Agenda click here. The following are the Power Point presentations from the conference:
Bill Bria, MD - Shriners Hospital for Children, Tampa - HIT in America - State of the Art 2007 and Why FAMDIS
Nir Menachemi, PhD, MPH - Florida State University - Ambulatory EHRs in Florida: Office of All Sizes May Apply
Chris Sullivan, PhD - Florida Center for Health Information and Policy Analysis, Agency for Health Care Administration - Florida RHIOs: Where are we headed? How do we get there? (link to website)

EMR Resources
The AAFP Center for Health Information Technology: The American Association of Family Physicians has been a leader in the development of HIT resources. The AAFP Center for HIT website contains an EMR readiness assessment, information on preparation to select an EMR, the selection process, and addresses implementation and maintenance issues. To access the AAFP Center website, click here.
The AMA website for HIT resources: Click here.
EMR use by Florida physicians: This Power Point presentation by Nir Medachemi, PhD, MPH, of Florida State University, outlines the current status of EMR usage by Florida physicians and some of the barriers and challenges to EMR adoption. For a link to the presentation, click here.
CCHIT certified EMRs: The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) has tested EMRs for functionality, interoperability and security. To access list of CCHIT certified products, click here.
The National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative: For information on a group offering free electronic prescribing software, click here.
-
Interconnecting Healthcare
The Florida RHIOs: The Governor's Health Information Infrastructure (GHII) is creating a health information technology (HIT) network which will eventually allow Florida healthcare providers to interconnect. At this time the GHII is divided into eight Regional Healthcare Information Organizations (RHIOs) - each building their own local information infrastructures. The goal is for the RHIOs to eventually join to create one healthcare information infrastructure for Florida.
The Florida effort is similar to those in many other states. A recent status report entitled "Development of State Level Health Information Initiatives" reviewed various state-wide initiatives, some of the barriers and challenges to implementation, and what needs to be done to advance these initiatives. To download the report, click here (PDF 1.6 MB).

SCMS Member Benefits:
The SCMS offers many benefits for our members, which include:
Advocacy: SCMS is the most effective way for Seminole County physicians to work together on important medical issues. SCMS provides a way to bring issues before the Florida Medical Association (FMA) and the American Medical Association. Over the last few years SCMS has developed close ties with the FMA, and has shown the ability to influence both the state and national physician agenda.
Legislative influence: SCMS has worked with the FMA to developed an effective lobbying effort on behalf of our members, forging close relationships with all the Seminole County state legislators.
Member representation: The SCMS and SCMS Foundation constantly work to promote our members within the community. SCMS has developed strong liaisons with the three Seminole County hospitals, the University of Central Florida, the Florida State University Medical School Orlando Campus, and the Seminole County Health Department.
The SCMS Legal Benefit Program: SCMS has created several medical liability benefits for members who have been in the Society for more than one continuous year. An outline of these benefits is on the SCMS website in the Member Center.
The SCMS grievance review process: SCMS works to minimize the impact of patient (or other) complaints against our members.
Quarterly Meeting Exhibit Table Discount: One SCMS member per quarterly meeting can receive $100 off the regular exhibit table rate if two weeks prior to the meeting there is still a table available.
SCMS Vendor Discounts: SCMS provides discounts for its members with companies such as Opta Comp, who offers workers comp insurance, ads with the Orlando Medical News, and Eidson Insurance, who offers a wide array of insurance products, including a 10% discount on medical malpractice insurance through Florida Doctors Insurance Co.
Member events: Members may attend Quarterly Dinner Meetings and the Annual Summer Family Picnic at no charge. These events give members a chance to network, meet new members, and build camaraderie.
The SCMS website: Our website has become an important means of promoting individual physicians, and for disseminating information about the SCMS, the SCMS Foundation and the SCMS Alliance. Several sections are accessible to members only, and a Member Forum will soon allow members to interact on various issues. Office Manager (for members' office managers only) and Patient & Community sections are also being developed.

What Is RSS? - RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's an easy way for you to keep up with news and information that's important to you, and helps you avoid the conventional methods of browsing or searching for information on websites. Now the content you want can be delivered directly to you without cluttering your inbox with e-mail messages. This content is called a "feed".
Instead of constantly checking the Web pages for changes and additions, the RSS feed delivers updates as soon as they are available.
How do I use RSS feeds? - Some browsers, such as the current versions of Firefox and Safari, have built in RSS readers. Instructions are here: Firefox (Windows, Mac), Safari (Mac). If you're using a browser that doesn't currently support RSS, such as Internet Explorer, either switch to Firefox (free download) or obtain an RSS Reader.
What Is an RSS Reader? - An RSS Reader is a small software program that collects and displays RSS feeds. It allows you to scan headlines from a number of news sources on your computer. There are a variety of RSS Readers available on the web; some are free to download and others are available for purchase.
How Do I Use an RSS Reader? - The first step is to choose an RSS Reader. Each reader has a slightly different way of adding a new feed, also called a "channel." Follow the directions for your reader but, in most cases, here's how it works:
