Thomas Kelley, MD presents a check for HHMP from the SCMS Foundation to Ralph Gousse, MD at the February, 2007, SCMS meeting.
-
Haiti Help Med Plus is a very special charity effort being directed by SCMS member Dr. Ralph Gousse.
-
HHMP is bringing hope and improved medical care to the back country of Haiti — the poorest country in the western hemisphere (where over 40% of the population have no healthcare). HHMP has made great progress in transforming a health clinic into a 10 bed hospital to provide basic maternity, medicine, pediatric, laboratory and radiological services. Their next step is building operating and radiology rooms — which will require around $30,000 to complete.
SCMS encourages our physicians and office personnel to help HHMP raise the funds they need. Office staffs can enjoy watching the hospital grow, and seeing what their contributions helped accomplish. Pictures of the hospital and people who will benefit are on the HHMP website or the hospital's progress can be followed via pictures to be put on the SCMS website over the next year.
Any contribution — large or small — will help. Offices (physicians and/or staff) that make contributions will receive a certificate to post acknowledging your generosity (great for PR with patients; great for morale at your office). Anyone can donate as an individual, or combine to donate as a group.
Checks should be made payable to “The SCMS Foundation” (make a note of which group should receive your gift) and the tax deductible donation mailed to:

From Ralph Gousse, MD (5/20/08)
I just came back from Haiti last night. Had time to check on the status of the construction of the new surgical suite, the new clinic, and more importantly, I delivered the first $10/month that some of you agreed on to help the poor kids. I was accompanied by my wife, Dr. Ted Kaplan (pediatrician in Orlando) and his wife Elizabeth (nurse at Arnold Palmer). We had a great time going from home to home (if you can call some of these structures "home") to visit the children and their families. Thank you all for your help.

Last week went to Paillant to go over work done so far for the expansion of the hospital operating suite and clinic. We were very happy with the work being done under the supervision of our colleague, Dr. Charles Antoine Louis. We still have a way to go, but at least the foundation and some of the walls are there. We met with the electrician, plumber, doctors and nurses. We spent Easter Sunday giving clothes to some needy in the area -- our best Easter ever!

From Ralph Gousse, MD (1/28/08)
I just came back from another trip to Paillant and Miragoane and here is a summmary of recent work completed:
- We received the trruck we sent last month that included an X-ray machine donated by Dr. Harold Greenberg.
- We started digging the foundation for the new surgical suite, thanks to donations from the doctors of Seminole County Medical Soceity. The donations will help us raise the walls and start some of the piping for electricity and plumbing.
- We are a good way into the repair of the house for doctors in Palliant that got destroyed during a fire 2 years ago.
- We delivered new equipment and supplies donated by Oncology Supplies and members of SCMS to the hospital in Paillant.
- So far we have identified about 34 families in dire need of food, clothes and money. So we have started a parallel program of sponsoring children for about $10 per month to pay for their school, food and clothes.
I will continue to keep you updated on our progress!

From Ralph Gousse, MD (12/07/07)
Mr. Henri Jabon just came back from Haiti to check on the status of the hospital. He was very happy to relay that last week the Department of Health sent a Cuban doctor and nurse to join the Haitian staff already working there with us.
Next year we expect to inaugurate a new operating room and a new outpatient clinic. If anyone you know want to make a contribution, the holidays season is a good time to do it — and help improve the condition of life of this small community in Haiti.
From Ralph Gousse, MD (8/31/07):
I just came back from Haiti and am going back again September 21st with another truckload of supplies. This will be my fourth trip for the year to the clinic. I took my whole family this time and we all had a lot of fun.
We have not started the surgical room yet since we do not have enough funds yet. But the little hospital is working well. We have now internet access, and I enjoyed discussing cases with the doctors.
We had to fix a house for the nurses to stay, and we are about to receive $20,000 from the ONU forces (who are now in Haiti) to fix up the house for the doctors. Unfortunately, the one they were to stay in caught fire after a gas bottle exploded. Because we did not have any funds to fix it, we have had problems keeping doctors in the area.-
