The SCMS Foundation is a non profit C-3 corporation that was created in 2006 to focus on the Society’s educational, public service and charitable activities. The components of the SCMS Foundation include:

The Seminole County Patient Safety Initiative
The SCMS Foundation is the host and driving force of the Initiative. The Foundation also coordinates the Seminole County Patient Safety Council.

The Central Florida EMR Conference
The SCMS Foundation was the host of this Conference, which was a cooperative effort of the Orange and Seminole County Medical Societies.

The Dr. Luis Perez Scholarship
Every year the Society awards a $2,000 scholarship to a high school student who demonstrates extraordinary scholarship, integrity, and a strong interest in science.

The Dr. Willie Newman Scholarship Fund
The Foundation has created this Fund in recognition of Dr. Willie Newman's 25 years of service to the women of Seminole County. A scholarship in his name will be awarded to an extraordinary high school student.

Charitable activities
The Foundation works with the SCMS Alliance to create opportunities for SCMS members to be involved in charitable activities. Current activities include:
Help Haiti Med Plus - a project organized by SCMS member Ralph Gousse, MD, dedicated to improving the quality of life in the back country of Haiti. The project is currently transforming an existing outpatient clinic into a ten bed hospital, complete with maternity, medicine, pediatric, laboratory and radiological services. The Longwood Shepherd's Hope Health Center - located in the Fairmont Plaza in Longwood. The Center is a free medical clinic for low-income, uninsured Seminole County residents. Evening clinics are staffed completely by volunteer medical professionals including physicians, ARNPs, PAs and nurses. Pathways to Care - a 40 bed not-for-profit respite center that provides short-term recuperative care and support services for homeless adult who are recovering from an acute illness or injury. This is the only facility in Seminole County that routinely accepts adults who are ready to be discharged from the hospital but are too ill to be able to care for themselves. United Servants Abroad - USA is a faith-based organization located out of the West Palm Beach area. USA connects project needs in various places of the world with people who want to help. SCMS member Michael Branch, MD, has been participating in USA missions over the last 15 years. The SCMS Physician Mentor Program
The Mentor Program brought the Society national attention during 2004-2005 for the work mentoring 24 minority high school students. The Program is currently being redesigned to maximize its effectiveness.

The Foundation will oversee all the Society’s CME activities throughout the year.
